Most people who have had COVID-19 recover within a few weeks. But some people, even those who had mild symptoms of the disease, continue to experience problems after their initial recovery. It has been called post-COVID-19 long haul syndrome or long COVID-19. Older people and people with many serious medical conditions are the most likely to experience lingering COVID-19 symptoms, but even young, healthy people can feel the effects for weeks to months after infection. Common signs and symptoms that linger over time include fatigue, joint pain, headaches, loss of smell or taste, and dizziness to name a few. It can also damage organs such as the heart and lungs. Mary Ann Yehl, D.O., is a board-certified family medicine physician and Medical Director of AtlantiCare Telemedicine and Ambulatory Quality Care.
